Just across the river from Boston, Cambridge offers residents and visitors alike the opportunity to experience a range of attractions that are distinct to the city. Infused with cultures from around the world, and the intellect of the Universities that call the city home, Cambridge is well known as a vibrant and eclectic cultural hub featuring world class museums, theatres, and music venues as well as architectural landmarks and notable displays of public art.
The Harvard Art Museums, Harvard Museum of Natural History, Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard Semitic Museum, MIT Museum, and List Visual Arts Center at MIT are important academic collections and each is individually noteworthy for its breadth.
Cambridge is also home to The American Repertory Theatre, and the Hasty Pudding Theatre, performance theatres known both nationally and internationally for their productions. In addition, The Brattle Theatre is a cinema that ran its first film in 1953 and today runs a variety of classic, foreign and independent films.
Music has a definite presence in the culture of Cambridge. Ryles Jazz Club, Club Passim, and Regattabar Jazz Club are all popular clubs featuring not only jazz artists but musicians from a wide range of genres.
Cambridge additionally has a unique blend of both historical and modern architecture. The home of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which was built in the 18th century, can be found here, as well as a number of homes and buildings of the same era. In contrast, both Harvard and MIT have had recent construction that is both intriguing and puzzling in its seemingly impossible complexity.
There are a number of public permanent art exhibits throughout Cambridge to check out as well, such as the “Gift of the Wind” sculpture in Porter Square, and a number of others scattered throughout the Harvard and MIT campuses.
The opportunities to see and explore different parts of Cambridge are boundless. The city is able to offer locations throughout that will satisfy anyone’s cultural curiosity. And for visitors that would like to venture outside of Cambridge there’s Boston’s Fenway Park, The John F. Kennedy National Historic Site in Brookline and The Larz Anderson Auto Museum also in Brookline.
